Marine Corps Body Fat Calculator (0.52 Waist-to-Height Rule)

Since January 1, 2026, Marines are screened by waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) instead of height and weight. The limit is 0.52 or less. Enter your height and waist to check yours.

Maximum waist by height (Marine Corps)

To meet the Marine Corps standard, your waist must be at or under this size. Waist is measured at the navel.

How to measure

  1. Measure your height without shoes.
  2. Measure your waist around the navel, using the same unit.
  3. Divide waist by height. 0.52 or less meets the Marine Corps standard.

Army Soldiers use a 0.55 limit. See the Army waist-to-height calculator.

FAQ

What waist-to-height ratio do Marines need?

0.52 or less, for every Marine regardless of sex or age. It took effect January 1, 2026. The Defense Department limit is 0.55, so the Marine Corps standard is stricter.

What happens if my ratio is over 0.52?

You get a body fat evaluation by tape test or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). BIA will replace the tape test once it is fully fielded. Marines who exceed the standards are enrolled in the Marine Corps Body Composition Program.

Do high PFT and CFT scores help?

They help on the body fat evaluation, not the ratio. Marines scoring 285 or higher on both the PFT and CFT get a body fat exception capped at 26% for males and 36% for females. The 1% body fat allowance for 250+ on both tests remains, within those caps.

How often are Marines checked?

Twice a year.
