Army Body Fat Calculator (2026 Waist-to-Height Rule)
The Army no longer uses body fat percentage, the tape test or height/weight tables. Since July 2026 the only standard is a waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) under 0.55. Enter your height and waist to check yours.

How to measure
- Measure your height in inches, without shoes.
- Measure your waist around the navel, using the same unit.
- Divide waist by height. Under 0.55 meets the Army standard.
Results near 0.55 are borderline. The official check uses certified NCOs and a same-day confirmation test, so measure carefully and leave margin.
What changed
The old Army Body Composition Program screened Soldiers with height and weight tables, then taped anyone over their weight limit to estimate body fat. Those steps are gone. Searching for an "army height and weight calculator" or "army tape test calculator" now gives outdated answers; this page uses the current rule.
Marines use a stricter limit. See the Marine Corps waist-to-height calculator.
FAQ
Does the Army still use the tape test or height and weight tables?
No. In July 2026 the Army retired the height and weight screening tables, the circumference-based tape test and supplemental body fat assessments. The waist-to-height ratio is now the body composition standard.
What waist-to-height ratio does the Army require?
Less than 0.55. A ratio of exactly 0.55 does not meet the standard. Waist is measured at the navel and divided by height.
How often is WHtR measured?
Twice per calendar year. Commanders can also direct an assessment at any time if they think a Soldier may not meet the standard.
What happens if I fail?
A Soldier at or above 0.55 gets a confirmation test by a different team the same day. If both measurements fail, the Soldier is flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Separation actions for WHtR failure are on hold during the Army's initial 180-day review.
Does a high AFT score exempt me?
No. The Army says the standard applies to all Soldiers regardless of Army Fitness Test scores.
